There is nothing more toxic than people in your life who don’t appreciate you, limit you or make you feel guilty for asking for what you need.
Whether it’s in your day-to-day life or in your business, these encounters can bring you down, and invite stress and anxiety into your life.
Trust me…you don’t need that.
As a designer, I’ve worked with clients who undermined me. As a blogger, I’ve worked with brands who’ve underpaid me. As a wife and mother, I’ve had people place unending expectations on me. As a kid growing up poor, I’ve had people set limits on me and decide what I’m capable of.
I’m sure you’ve had some of these people in your life at one time or another.
I know I’ve had several.
But I’m moving beyond that.
One thing I’ve discovered since running my own business, is that I fully have the power to remove these people from my life. And the more financially independent I become, the easier it is to say “goodbye”. ADIOS.
I’ve found that working for yourself helps you to remove toxic influences from your life in two major ways.
Firstly, you’re the BOSS. That means, if you don’t like working with someone, you have every opportunity to cross them off your list and move on without wondering how it’s going to affect your boss or co-workers. That alone…is pretty damn priceless.
Secondly, you’ll come to realize that nobody but you is going to stand up for YOU. There is no Human Resources office. There is no one to help you solve your problems or manage a conflict, but you. This means that you have no choice but to face conflict head-on and give someone the boot yourself, when needed.
These two facts not only empower you in your business, but they help you to achieve more control in your personal life too. The longer I’ve been in business, the more I see how these skills have helped me to manage aspects of my personal life that I usually avoid.
Whether it’s a friend, family, acquaintance, client, brand or other influence in your life that’s holding you back, limiting you or otherwise making you feel small…know that you CAN (and should) evict them from your life…and business.
