A few years back, I read (ok, listened to) this interesting book called, “The Big Leap.” In the book, the author talks about what he calls the “Zone of Genius.”
Basically, when you’re in your “Zone of Genius,” you are choosing to focus on your innate talents, rather than learned skills.
This idea really spoke to me, because it’s something I’ve always believed in and have had to defend as a creative.
Doing what you love, doing what comes easily to you, doing what you’re naturally good at is the real key to success.
And since running my own business, this concept has resonated even more in terms of productivity.
Think about it…when you’re focusing on the wrong tasks, you’re essentially wasting time. Because you’re doing something that doesn’t come easily to you, the task will take longer, be more difficult and you’ll be far less productive than you should be.
Oppositely, when you’re in your “Zone of Genius,” you’ll have a much easier time completing the task, it will take less time and you’ll actually enjoy doing it.
This is why knowing yourself (the tasks you love and the ones you absolutely despise) can help you be a better business owner.
When you know yourself (your gifts and your flaws), you can make better decisions about where to invest your time and what to eliminate from your list.
Delegate. Collaborate. Eliminate.
If you’re not talented in something, don’t force yourself into it. Instead, hire someone else to handle it. Collaborate with other creatives. Or just flat out turn down the task.
When you learn to say “no” to anything outside your “Zone of Genius,” you’ll free yourself up for the RIGHT types of projects so you can focus on making more money with less effort. 💖
Best,
Chantilly
